Base Buddies

Base Buddies are teams who come to play with our Challenger Team.
We would LOVE TO HAVE YOU!

They will partner up individually with the players, run the bases, play the field, and bring smiles to all involved!
We invite DLL teams, travel teams, school teams and youth groups to participate: AGES 8 & UP.

GAMES ARE MONDAY AT 6PM & last for one hour.
If the game is cancelled, it will be announced on our FACEBOOK page.

FALL SEASON | SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER
SPRING SEASON | APRIL, MAY, & JUNE

How Does Our Game Work for the Challenger Team?
Our team plays with foam balls which are designed to travel through the field without causing injury. We have a variety of bats for the players to use. Challenger Players do not have to wear a helmet or cleats but may if they wish to.  Parents ARE allowed & encouraged to be on the field with their player as much as they wish.  The team is divided by boys and girls, batting through the complete order each time and moving advancing one base at a time. Our dedicated coach learns the players and pitches to them in a way for them to be able to hit the ball. There is no strike limit & once contact is made the player begins to run the bases. Outs & Runs are not counted, the goal is to HAVE FUN!

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ONCE YOU SIGN-UP

What does a team need to do once they sign up?

The Base Buddy team should arrive at 5:45pm and respond to the third base dugout on K&W field at the complex.  Players can put any drinks, phones, or items in this dugout. The First Base dugout needs to be for the Challenger players.

Players do not need to wear pants. We encourage the team to wear their matching jerseys or team shirts and hats. Players will not need a glove, but they can bring one. Players can also grab our foam Challenger Balls and pair up with a Challenger Player and lightly toss.  Players should not bring baseballs or softballs onto the field.

When Coach Rich believes he has most of his Challenger Team present, he will have the team line up. The Base Buddies will line up on the third base foul line between third base and home plate for the pledge.

Depending on the number of players, the Base Buddies will either be paired up with a player or split with half in the field, half with the batters. Base Buddies with batters should stand near home plate and be ready to run when the player hits the ball. Once they hit the ball, they should run with them and help guide them to first. They will STOP at first base (unless they are the last batter, then they will run all the way to home).

When the next batter hits, the move to second and so on.

Players in the field should INTERACT with players. Let them get the ball, toss a ball to them, and learn about them.  Base Buddies should make sure they are both in the field and running the bases. Be helpful to the coaches and encourage a player to throw the ball back and forth with you.

The boys and girls will switch back and forth for one hour. At the end, ALL players and BASE BUDDIES will gather at home plate for a GROUP PHOTO. They will then gather in a circle for a final "hands in".

Teams may bring snacks to hand the Challenger Team after the game, such as donuts, cookies, etc. Please keep in mind that one player does have a gluten allergy and bringing a special snack for her is appreciated. If you want to hand out snacks, it works well to stand at the exit to the first base dug out.

Coaches are encouraged to participate and are expected to keep their team organized.

Key points to remember & relay to your player in a pregame meeting are:
*This game is the highlight for many of the Challenger Players week, and we want to make this AMAZING for them.
*Learn their names and CHEER for them!
*Players should refrain from "goofing" off and bunching up together.  Coaches should monitor this.
*Safety of all involved is number one.
*Remember, this is THEIR game. They are getting one hour to play a game that most players get to play for several hours a week.
*High five the players!
*Talk to all the players like they are your teammates. Remember, just because they have a Challenge, they are no different and understand everything you say.
*Don't be afraid to hug, shake hands, or get to know the players.
*Be aware that some players may have a sensitivity to crowds and sounds.
